Why A Computing Camp Just For Girls?
Misconceptions About Girls In Computing

Code Secrets
Science And Computing Camp For Girls
Mr. Michael T. Roche at High Technology High School

We'll update this information in early 2019.

Come Code with Us
If you want to be a veterinarian or an environmental scientist, of course you need to know how to read, how to write, and how to do math. But what if you also knew how to code?

This program will be a hands on adventure into the world of computing and science. You’ll be exposed to coding and the use of sensors to gather information from the world around you. You need to be curious and interested in exploring. You don’t need to know computer programming.

This year, for the first time, we'll be working with a 3D printer!  We'll be printing parts for a prosthetic arm for kids.

We’re excited to be able to operate out of the research wing at High Technology High School this year. Mr. Roche will be teaching the course assisted by his team of TAs who are current HTHS students.

This camp is for girls only so you'll learn computing in a team environment where everyone is learning together.

Click here for our brochure and our on-line application. The video above is from Code.org and does a great job of explaining why computing (coding) is important. If you'd like to try a little coding, try one of the tutorials on Code.org. They're fun!

What's going to happen?
We'll be doing SCIENCE in this course. Let’s start with enjoying - We promise you a fun, fast-paced week! We’ll introduce you to a few types of sensors and how they actually “sense” an environment. We’ll help you understand a few basic principles common to programming languages and get you started on coding. From there, what can you imagine creating with the ability to sense and code? We’ll experiment using Arduino microcontrollers that you can program and play with. Lastly, networking with successful students and professionals who use coding everyday will open your eyes to creative new possibilities. Back to enjoying - “sound like fun?” - you’re the student we want in this pilot course.

Explore these pages to see why we're doing a computing camp specifically for girls and how we plan to address many of the misconceptions girls have about Computing.

Dates and Times
Our program will meet for one week, Monday - Friday, from July 9-13, 2018. Classes will meet from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM at High Technology High School on the Brookdale Community College Campus.

Students must provide their own transportation to and from HTHS. Students should bring their own snacks and lunch.

Mr. Roche, research advisor and biology teacher at High Technology High School, will lead our Code Secrets computing camp.

Application Deadline
The on-line application deadline is June 26.  We will send out "rolling acceptance emails" during the spring. Final acceptances will be sent on June 30 via email.

Tuition for the five day course is $300.

The program is open to girls who will have completed the 6th  or 7th grade by June, 2018. Students must have earned a B or better in the current year's science course.

Application Process
Please fill out the on-line application. We'll send you an email acknowledgement that we received it.
