Summer Camp at Sandy Hook
Marine Science Program for Middle School Students
Hosted by MAST
Summer Camp at Sandy Hook is a hands-on marine sciences program with both lab and field work that explores the marine life and habitats of Sandy Hook's beaches and estuaries. It is hosted by the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST). Click here for our brochure or here for a short video. There was also an article in the Asbury Park Press that is quite nice.
MAST began hosting this program in 1991. Wow!
The topics covered include:
- Marine Life: We will collect, identify and dissect marine plants and animals.
- Marine Habitats: We will explore inter-tidal beaches, salt marshes, estuaries, the holly forest, as well as the bay and the ocean.
- Physical Oceanography: We will analyze the waves, tides and currents along with their impact on the beach.
- Water Chemistry: We will investigate techniques for sampling water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen content.
- Marine Careers: We will present various marine occupational areas as well as their educational requirements.
- Lab and Field: Each day will include both lab work and field work on Sandy Hook.
- Certificate: A Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
